In order to support the Epson 9800 you would need to upgrade your version of Blackmagic to the current version (3.5). Epson 9800 support was introduced in version 3.1 and is not available in version 2.

As far as calibration goes, the current manual which you can download from our website, contains a section on calibrating printers. Most of that also applies to version 2 its just that the screen shots might look different,

Hi Adam,

It's known that Photoshop has problems with LUT-Profiles which are not correct handled and some miscalculation within Photoshop can happen. The results are as you describe. It happened to us too.

Use instead of LUT-Profiles better Matrix-Profiles. These ones work well with Photoshop and your problem will be gone. You distinguish Matrix-Profiles easily, as they are very small, just some KB (normaly less than 10 KB).

Blackmagic is sometimes blamed for this, but it's not the cause of this problem.

When I submit or print an eps file to the Blackmagic rip I get different results depending on whether I have an embedded profile within the file. The file prints accurately when the embedded profile has been removed, otherwise the output is noticeably lighter & the color is wrong. Support has told me that it is photoshop & the way it embeds the profile into the eps. Considering our current work flow is to embed the profile(Photoshop's default) and no other RIPS have an issue with it I think this would be a bug on Blackmagics end. This is also a pain in the ass when printing legacy jobs, because we have to open & save any eps file that had profiles embedded. Anyone know a way to have Blackmagic ignore embedded profiles?

Hi All,

Thought it was about time I gave a long overdue update to the FOGRA 39 proofing on our Blackmagic server.

At the time I was trying hard to set up proofing on our Epson 9600 using GMG Semimatte 250gsm proofing paper and the latest FOGRA media wedge. I created a paper profile using Profile Maker software which seemed very promising. When I switched on 'Absolute Colourmetric' at the server and measured the media wedge with my Eye One I could not get a pass on the Paper Delta E, the reason was that the background seemed to have more magenta than was necessary. There seemed to be no easy way to knock back the magenta without effecting the rest of the measurements.

As it happened, the amount of proofing that was needed meant that we could purchase two new Epson 9800s! On profiling these printers in the same way and using the same paper I could achieve the correct value in the paper measurement. In fact we have consistently achieved a good average of 2.5 Delta E overall on the colours and the paper value. I think that this is largely down to the new black's on the printer etc.

We are ouputting .pdf files to a Xitron HQ-RIP and outputting files from the output buffer of the RIP to the Blackmagic server. We are also taking bitmaps from our Agfa Apogee Printdrive to the Xitron-HQ-RIP and using Virtual Press to combine and print with excellent results. I believe that there are Agfa houses not using Serendipity Blackmagic that are struggling to achieve FOGRA 39 passes.

I must say that Blackmagic is the tops!

Thank you for your help.

Hello all, not directly a Blackmagic issue, but I hope someone can shed some light on a problem I'm having, has anyone got any thoughts on this.
I ran a TC 3.5 profile swatch on a litho press. When evaluating the resulting dot gain in Gretag Measure tool it showed a low gain in the highlight on the yellow and Black units. Now, if you view the same profile in Colour Think curves/ Dot gain you see the low dot gain in the shadows. The resulting curves in Colour Think are an almost exact mirror of those in Measure tool, as if something buggy is in one of the apps. If you take a dot gain reading manually with a Grtag Densieye the dot gains are simular to the colour think curves. Any Ideas ?

Did you know that both Serendipity Blackmagic has a Web server built in. This allows you to access the information about the server and the jobs processing from your own web browser (providing you have a network connection to the server). It does not allow any user interaction with the jobs but does allow you track their progress.

Accessing the web server is simply a matter of entering the servers IP address or name (where Blackmagic or Megarip is installed) followed by a colon and then the port number of 8080

e.g.

192.168.3.43:8080

Then press the Enter key. This should connect you to the server where you can view queues, system info, log files and access support. For more information see our Blog http://blog.serendipity-software.com.au/archives/2007/07/16/web-server/ and then give it a go.

Recent tests in Germany using an Epson 4800/7800/9800 with K3, showed that Blackmagic passes the ISO-39 / Fogra specifications. There is no reason why your Epson 9600 using Ultra-Chrome inks cannot perform and pass the same tests.

I sent your dealer a copy of the ICC report information which I hope they will forward onto you. We also supplied a copy of the pagesetup information.

Some tips on creating a Paper Profile would also be appreciated. I have tried using the 'Sift' option on the Paper Profile option in the Workbench but could not get a good result, also some help in interpreting the Limit Test correctly would be of help. I was using v3.02 at the time though. I also have a Xrite DTP34 on the BM to help me out with the Paper Profile, I will be purchasing a Eye One soon. Thank you for your help. I have v3.2 installed on a Macintosh 2 x 3ghz Duel Core Intel with 2gb RAM and running Mac OS 10.4.10.

Hi Rick

I assume this is the same question that is being asked by your dealer in Canada at the moment. From my understanding it is a question of page size and the bleeds are outside of the imageable area of the printer/page size. You can verify this using a PDF output and the render effect of signature decoration. Turn on the print trim lines and set it to page size and you you will get a line around the page. If the bleeds are still there in the PDF which does not have a size restriction then it may be the printer.

I suggested to the engineer that you try settings the printers default (no page set) value in the customs settings. I understand that this defaulted to an 8.5 x 11 pagesize. This would be a default set by the printers front control panel so see if there is a default for a larger page size. It looks like you need A3plus ( or A3 extra ).

The other thing that you may have to do is set a page size in the sheet area of the pagesetup and set the fit method to width and height. This would be the case if the page+bleeds exceeds the printable area of the printer. ie pagesize - margins. To find the margins of the printer send a job with a thickish line around the edge of the paper size you are printing on. Then measure the point where the line starts and the remainder of the line thickness. Subtract these values from the page size and you have the printable area as well as the margins. You can then set the page size and centre it.

I hope this helps. Please let me of/and your dealer know the out come of the tests.

regards

Hi Harold

Not really. Older client will throw up error because there are calls in the server component that the Client doesn't understand. You should always keep a matching set of Client and Server. But if you want to try I can send you the last one before the change. It may work limitedly for what you want but there may well be a few annoying messages too. I will drop you an email separately with details.

regards

This occurs when trying to launch the current client on a P3 based computer. From V3.3P1 onwards only P4 and above chip sets are supported for both Server and Client.

Hi

No - The paper profiles are created based on our driver and software and are not compatible with any other vendor or visa versa. You must create your own one from within the Paper Profile generator or use a default one.

Hi

The 41 is really a strip reader which is why it is only in the lineariser. All the other applications we have require spot readers. You can place the 41 into spot mode but it is kind of tricky trying to line up the read head on the respective patch. The DTP 45 has the ability to to change the base plate for spot measurements and this is the supported.

If you want to use the 41 to read Paper profiles then one of our dealers wrote a utility to read measurements with the 41 and save them to a file. You can then import this file into the paper profile. The website is http://www.colorplaza.nl/ - it's in Dutch but you can drop them a line.
